Ebook About
A prize-winning Dutch journalist’s unsparing memoir of growing up amid the excesses, triumphs, and devastation of post–World War II Europe. What can a son say upon discovering that his father wore a Nazi uniform? Reporter Alexander Münninghoff was only four when he found this mortifying relic from his father’s recent past in his attic. This shameful memento came to symbolize not only his father’s tragically misguided allegiance but also a shattered marriage and ultimately the unconscionable separation of a mother and son.In this revelatory memoir, the author confronts his parents’ complex past as he reconstructs the fortunes and disillusions of an entire family upheaved during the changes of twentieth-century Europe. The Münninghoffs were driven by greed, rebellion, and rage. An embattled dynasty, they were torn between the right and the wrong side of history. Their saga haunted Alexander’s life for the next seventy years.Only in reconciling with them can this man find the courage to move forward as son and heir to the startling legacy of a flawed yet grand tradition.

Book The Son and Heir: A Memoir Review :

In this book, written towards the end of the author’s life, the author exposes his shameful little secret: His father was a Nazi.My grandparents were also Nazis. Horrifying as this fact is, I refuse to find shame in it; their sins were not my sins. But I was helped along in this by the fact that my family immigrated to the U.S. when I was a young child. If I had been raised in Germany, I might well carry the guilt my same-age German relatives still harbor.Still, for obvious reasons, I was drawn to this book. It intrigues me how others deal with the dawning realization of their family history.Extremely well written. Thoroughly engrossing. Reads like a novel. I can not say enough good things about this book. It’s really really good.
Franz Munninghof, son and heir of a wealthy Russian German family living in the Netherlands, discovers a secret in the attic; his father Joan Munninghof was actually working with the Nazis. This father, a spoiled, "rich kid" was attracted by the huge promises of power and prominence by Hitler's regime and dreamed of being influential. And he was not alone in believing this; the Duke and Duchess of Windsor hobnobbed with the Nazis, perhaps dreaming of being king once more, after having been kicked out of England when he married a twice-divorced American and abdicated the throne. One aspect perhaps Americans are not familiar with; in Europe, the officers in the military are from "good families" historically. The stratified society in a way developed the "commissioned" and "non-commissioned" officer system, where if you were not from aristocracy, you were not part of the officers' club. So if you WERE from wealthy and aristocratic origins, you'd naturally have been socializing with officers in the German regime. And be dazzled by them in the megalomaniac dreams of complete power.Even now, three-quarters of a century later, you wouldn't believe how many secrets people hold about "what they did in the war" even though much of that generation is now gone. I lived in Germany twenty years ago, and the stories people would tell would unfold after you got to know them for a while and these were stories you don't read in books. The elegant old gentleman walking his dog in the Kurpark every morning; an officer in the Luftwaffe and shot down twice, the people who hid Jews in their barn at risk to the entire family, the well-built stone factory buildings left to decay in a remote corner of town, in a country where every single building is maintained like a Swiss watch. This book is based on a true story with the names altered and it's a great view into the spread of the sympathizers and supporters of the terrible Nazi regime, giving you an idea how deep in Europe this penetrated; it was NOT just limited to Germany and Austria. Well worth reading.
